The Spark: From Germany to Costa Rica
Every meaningful journey has a defining starting point. For Kalkonu Travel, that spark was lit in 2001 when Katja Bärwolf, a travel enthusiast originally from Germany, decided to make Costa Rica her permanent home. Equipped with a degree in International Tourism Management and a deep curiosity for the natural world, she fell in love with the country's untamed landscapes, warm people, and vibrant biodiversity.
Living and working on the ground, Katja spent years exploring the rainforests, cloud forests, and coastlines of this Central American paradise. She recognized a growing need for travel that goes beyond the surface—experiences that don't just show the sights, but truly connect visitors to the soul of the country. This vision led to the birth of Kalkonu Travel in 2009.
Connecting travelers with local culture and extraordinary ecosystems has been our mission from day one.
Growing into a Trusted Partner
Over the years, what started as a passionate endeavor has steadily evolved. Today, Kalkonu Travel is a highly respected, locally established Destination Management Company (DMC). We serve individual travelers and international agency partners alike, acting as their eyes, ears, and local experts in Costa Rica.
Despite our growth, our core identity has remained completely unchanged. We pride ourselves on providing highly personalized service, offering direct and honest advice, and staying intimately involved in every single booking. Because we live here, we know which eco-lodges truly practice conservation, which roads require a 4x4, and which local guides bring the rainforest to life.
